Pulsed Weather Radar

Pulsed Weather Radar

Designed and built for the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), the system combines pulse-based ranging with angular tracking to measure wind direction, wind speed, temperature, pressure, and humidity across multiple atmospheric levels — providing meteorological stations with accurate, automated upper-air observation data.

Description

Our Pulsed Weather Radar operates in the L-band (1669–1681 MHz) and employs single-channel monopulse phase-comparison technology to deliver high-precision atmospheric detection from ground level to 30 km altitude. Pulse Weather Radar Control System

Key Features

  • L-band pulsed architecture - operates at 1669–1681 MHz with pulse-based transmission, enabling precise ranging from 100 m to 200 km within a single coherent system
  • Single-channel monopulse phase-comparison technique - first-of-its-kind implementation in the L-band; delivers angular tracking accuracy of ≤ 0.08° RMS at elevation angles above 6°
  • Close-range precision ranging - short-range distance measurement technology provides accurate ranging within 100 m, covering the full detection envelope from near-field to 200 km
  • Full hemispheric coverage - 360° azimuth rotation and −2° to +92° elevation sweep ensure continuous balloon tracking from launch to maximum altitude
  • Fully automated operation - radar tracking, data acquisition, meteorological data processing, and message compilation are all performed without manual intervention
  • Radio theodolite functionality - angular measurement capability equivalent to a dedicated radio theodolite instrument

Application Fields

National Upper-Air Observing Networks: Deployed as a primary upper-air sounding radar at meteorological stations, providing multi-level wind profiles, temperature, pressure, and humidity data for weather analysis and numerical weather prediction model initialization.

Severe Weather Monitoring: The wide detection range (100 m to 200 km) and high angular accuracy (≤ 0.08° RMS) support tracking of rapidly evolving atmospheric conditions, contributing to early warning systems for high-impact weather events.

Civil Aviation Supplies detailed wind shear and atmospheric profile data for flight planning, route optimization, and aerodrome safety assessment at airports and en-route reporting points.

Defense & Special Operations Weather Support: Provides on-demand upper-air meteorological profiling for mission planning and operational weather assurance, with robust environmental tolerance suitable for forward-deployed positions (−40 °C to +50 °C).

Environmental & Pollution Monitoring: Enables vertical profiling of atmospheric transport layers to support pollutant diffusion modeling and environmental emergency response.

Research & Atmospheric Science: Supports boundary layer research, radiosonde calibration campaigns, and atmospheric dynamics studies requiring high-accuracy angular and range measurements.

Why Choose Our Pulsed Weather Radar

This weather radar uses monopulse phase comparison technology, and achieves an angular precision up to 0.08° RMS. It enables accurate distance measurement from 100 m up to 200 km, having a reliable near-field detection, and continuous wide-angle tracking over the entire hemisphere. The power for the radar is minimally 1kW, its configuration is compact and reconfigurable, and it can be operated in fully automatic mode, which greatly reduces the manpower for fixed station and field work while ensuring stable and high precision detection capability.

Customization Support

We can do customized system configuration based on different operational requirements, like, for various setups. Sometimes it involves a bit of integration and a new way of arranging things, include:

  • Multi-language software interface
  • Data communication integration
  • Regional meteorological standards, and related alignment
  • Ground station configuration
