Definition of A Lightning Arrester

An electrical device designed to protect electrical equipment from the hazards of high transient overvoltages, and to limit the duration-and often also the magnitude-of follow currents. This term encompasses any external clearances essential to the proper functioning of the device during installation and operation, regardless of whether such clearances constitute an integral part of the device assembly.

Note 1: Surge arresters are typically connected between power network conductors and ground; however, they are sometimes connected across equipment windings or between conductors.

Note 2: Surge arresters are sometimes also referred to as overvoltage protectors or overvoltage limiters (surge dividers).
